Salvaging what I can from a few branches in my firewood pile.
This time I have two black walnut branches and two white oak branches to figure out. They are all about 6"-8" in diameter and about 6 feet long. The perfect size for my OS18. The walnut has lots of cool white sapwood contrasting with the beautiful dark brown heartwood. The white oak turned out to have all kinds of really interesting medullary rays where the sections are quarter-sawn. They should be great to make some small projects once properly dried out.
Please note: I’m no kind of expert with the sawmill, but I’m figuring it out. This all began a few years back when I started harvesting all these magnificent trees for firewood. I clearly needed a sawmill.
Where possible, I'll include the harvest of the tree, then the processing of it into lumber for my own use or futures sales. The trees have all been removed from my family’s farm in Southern Ontario, Canada. They are all hardwoods and the plot hasn't been harvested in a while. I've been concentrating on standing dead, uprooted and just cleaning up the land. If you like watching a sawmill in action, this is the channel for you! You can also expect a few sawmill related projects and watch the development of my new sawmill yard. Thank you so much for watching and please subscribe to help me grow my channel.
@jasonselinger Welcome to From Tree to Lumber! I'm a DIY builder using a portable sawmill to turn Southern Ontario standing timber into custom wood. This channel documents the entire timber framing process, and you'll learn along with me: from harvesting the logs to milling, joining (mortise and tenon), and raising the finished timber frame structure. We specialize in finding unique figured wood, burls, and highly valuable species like quartersawn oak, black walnut and black cherry. We share real-world tool reviews, construction tips, and the economics of building with your own wood.
New long-form projects (like the white oak rafter build) are posted most Sunday mornings. Subscribe to follow the builds! Join the community and let me know what kind of wood figure I should hunt for next.
