This video has been in the works for about two years. I initially held off on uploading it because I kept discovering new connections between different Chopin pieces and the music of other composers.
First and foremost, the goal of this video is not to disparage Frédéric Chopin. He is my favorite composer. Rather, I want to challenge the modern instinct that every musical idea must be completely original.
Chopin composed during a time when improvisation was highly valued. As the examples in this video suggest, many of his works may have developed from improvisations on themes by other composers—something that was common practice in the musical culture of the 19th century.
There are many additional connections I discovered that I chose not to include, either because the chronology was uncertain or because the similarities may simply be coincidental.
I hope you enjoy the video! If you're interested in exploring the music Chopin likely heard, played, or enjoyed, feel free to check out my MuseScore page, where I’ve notated hundreds of scores by his classmates and teachers.
