Cathedral of the Pines (March 2023) -3°C Forest Wild Camp

We had already picked the dates for a camp in the forest. It just happened that the dates we picked, when we were all free, were also in the middle of a cold spell, with temperatures dropping to the minuses. It was enough to make me feel a little trepedatious, as it had been about twenty years since I had camped in freezing temperatures. It was a nervous excitement, a challenge, every gear choice mattering more than usual. It felt more, "life and death", which is a bit extreme and dramatic, but there are risks for the unprepared, and most of us are used to cosy beds and central heating, so of course, the idea of sleeping in -3C is enough to ruffle the feathers. We were at an elevation of around 290m, so in theory it dropped to -5C, but we didn't have a thermometer to confirm that, however, we did have frozen water bags, and icicles. One of the more important learnings from this trip, was not to leave your water filters outside in freezing temperatures. There is no way of knowing, but the freezing temperatures can damage the filter, and it is probably too risky to use after a freeze. This will be a good excuse to get a filter with a better flow rate though...always good to have an excuse for new gear purchases.
