In this jazz guitar lesson, I break down a Charlie Parker–influenced V–I line from Bruce Forman’s instructional video ii-V-FUN and use it as a springboard to explore deeper harmonic thinking. After analyzing the original line and one of Bruce’s variations, I extract two core harmonic concepts that live beneath the notes.
From there, I demonstrate three additional ii–V–I lines built from those same concepts, showing how a single idea can be reshaped, relocated, and personalized in countless ways. The goal of this lesson is to move beyond memorizing licks and toward understanding why a line works, so you can generate your own vocabulary with confidence.
By learning one line deeply and identifying the concepts behind it, you can unlock a lifetime of usable ii–V–I material across keys and tempos. Hope you enjoy!
If this lesson helps you rethink how you practice ii–V–I’s, leave a comment and let me know what concept stood out to you the most. I read every comment, and your questions often shape future lessons.
