Catacombs of Paris / Quarries of Paris

LOCATION: 20–30 meters under Paris streets.

FACTS
WARNING THE PARIS CATACOMBS ARE LIKE A HUGE LABYRINTH, DO NOT GO THERE ALONE WITHOUT A GUIDE.

Before Paris existed, there was stone quarries on the land. The quarries were forgotten until the cemeteries were overflowing in the late 1600s. The city of Paris then used some of the submerged tunnels to store remains of more than 6 million people, neatly built into skeleton piles. The quarries are not real catacombs, it’s just a name it has been called since the remains were left here. The tunnels span over more than 300 kilometers, 20–30 meters under the streets. Just some of them contains skeleton parts.
