Kate Coleridge runs a boutique PR and Marketing company called Handpicked Africa. Having spent her late twenties guiding horseback safaris in Africa, she is no stranger to adventure and, on hearing about the SES’s mounted expedition to Mongolia, she saw an opportunity; to experience an exhilarating riding experience across Mongolia, and to follow in her mother's footsteps expeditioning with SES Founder Colonel John Blashford-Snell.
The expedition, which took place in July 2023, had three key areas of interest – archaeology, botany, and zoology, and like all SES expeditions, the team carried out various medical and dentistry work in remote communities along the way.
Having ridden ten days across the desert to study the wild horses of Namibia, Kate’s official role on this expedition was to study the critically endangered Przewalski horse, in fact, the only truly wild horse left in the world today.
However, at the end of three weeks, the team learned so much more about Mongolia: its rich culture and traditions, enigmatic ancient deer stones, inspiring nomadic way of life, and the deeply integral horsemanship that comes with that.
This is an evening that will take you travelling East from Ulaanbaatar into the untamed wilderness of the Khan Khentii, as the team explores a forgotten monastery, debates the origins of the mysterious Bronze Age tombs with their striking megalithic art, and finds themselves at a traditional annual Naadam festival in a remote community on the Mongolia steppe.
