One of the most important habitats for conservation in many countries. Estuaries form as rivers meet the sea. The river bring down nutrient and sediment. The sediment creates muddy estuaries, which then are shallow so warm as heat up easily and light and daylight penetrates the shallow water. This is perfect for the growth of microscopic phytoplankton, which is then fed upon by zooplankton. Both are then eaten by a range of species including many worms and molluscs. These provide the prey for wading birds, which here included sanderling, knot, dunlin, oystercatcher and curlew.
Coastal conservation is a key issue in many areas incuding the Waddensea, the Yellow Sea and the Wash. They are under threat from rising sea level and coastal development.
