The foundation a skill of fireground thermal imaging use is how and where we point the TIC. This is known as the "scan" as it is generally referred to. The majority of the fire service (including Insight Training) were taught or previously taught to begin our scan high.
However, we have learned that scans should begin low and move upward. By scanning low to high firefighters learn quite quickly that the majority of fire service TICs "see better" in lower temperatures which are found in the lower areas. This keeps the TIC in high sensitivity which allows for greater detail. Once the TIC is pointed upward, the majority of TICs on the market will switch to low sensitivity which will cause a loss of detail in the image in the lower areas where victims are found.
By beginning our scan low, we can look for life and layout first! 58% of all fire victims were found on the floor! This can provide valuable intel to the firefighter by starting their scan low. As they progress upwards if their TIC freezes, the firefighter should stop their scan, and allow the TIC to refresh and catch up. If they scan too fast they will miss valuable information.
This is one of many short educational videos we will offer on this subject.
