As if hiking the Fish River Canyon wasn't spectacular enough I was fortunate to stumble across this Transnamib class 33 while driving home.
The line between Grunau and Karasburg runs parallel to the road towards the border outpost of Ariemsvlei. Needless to say, a short chase ensued back towards Grunau where I decided to discontinue my pursuit for the sake and sanity of my travel companions.
Number 483 is a General Electric type U20C and was previously owned by the South African Railways where they were classified as class 33 - 400. 115 of these locomotives were delivered between 1968 - 1970 with a large majority of them being transferred to Namibia in 1990. The class 33 were commonly called "Bosvark" meaning bush pig in Afrikaans.
Today they like finding chickens teeth with only a handful still in service. Travelling as light as possible I had none of my usual camera gear at hand but did some handheld filming using my DSLR with a no-frills kit lens and no tripod. Luckily the wind wasn't blowing as I also didn't have my external microphone there.
Karas Region, Namibia.
