Dozens of beaches along Australia’s east coast were closed on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, following a series of shark attacks that experts say were triggered by dangerous environmental conditions.

Beaches in Sydney and nearby areas, including Port Macquarie, were shut after four shark attacks were reported in just two days. Authorities said a surfer bitten earlier in the day remains hospitalized in stable condition, while other recent incidents involved surfers and children, with one victim listed in critical condition.

Experts said days of heavy rain washed sewage runoff into coastal waters, attracting bait fish and predators such as bull sharks, which thrive in brackish conditions. Officials noted that all beaches in Sydney’s Northern Beaches area will remain closed until further notice.
