Automatic Generation Control (AGC) is a system used in power grids to maintain the balance between electricity supply and demand by adjusting the power output of multiple generators.
AGC ensures that the power grid operates at a stable frequency (typically 50 or 60 Hz) by balancing generation and load. It adjusts the real power output of generators in response to changes in load, maintaining system frequency and scheduled power exchanges between different control areas.
AGC systems typically include turbine-governor control, which adjusts the mechanical power output of turbines, and energy management systems (EMS) that monitor and send control signals to generators. AGC can use various control strategies, such as Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers, fuzzy logic controllers, and artificial neural networks, to achieve precise control. By maintaining stable frequency and efficient power distribution, AGC improves the overall reliability, stability, and economy of the power grid.
