What can we do to put the best product possible so that in 50 years' time, the PGA Tour is still thriving, and we can safeguard the future of the Tour?'
With a new series of eight "elevated events" featuring massive purse money, another four events set to be added to the slate, the increase in money in the Player Impact Program, and the top players in the program playing against each other over 20 events starting next year, it's a massive shift in the PGA Tour landscape.
In addition to the changes coming directly to the Tour, McIlroy and Tiger Woods are teaming up to bring a new team-based golf league to the scene in January 2024.
PGA Tour changes, explained
PGA Tour president Jay Monahan sent a lengthy memo to the players on Wednesday detailing several changes coming to the Tour:
There are several key measures outlined. Here's what they are:
Elevated events
In addition to eight previously discussed "elevated events" that feature bigger purses, there will be four more elevated events throughout the 2023 PGA Tour season. The tournaments are to be determined, but they will have an average purse of $20 million, upping the prize money for the tournaments.
Top players in 20 events
A player collective will participate in the 12 elevated events, plus three more FedEx Cup events, the four majors and The Players Championship, for a total of 20 events. This guarantees that the best players will participate and play on the biggest stages.
This also indicates that the top 20 players by Player Impact Program (PIP) must participate in 20 events per year, tightening the schedule for players, instead of loosening it.
McIlroy explained the decision to move toward the collective playing against one another more frequently moving forward.

Changes to the Player Impact Program
The PIP will now reward 20 players, and the payout will double from $50 million to $100 million. In addition to this, the Q-metric and social media metrics aspects of the PIP will be removed, and replaced by "internet searches, general awareness, golf fan awareness, media mentions and broadcast exposure."
Earnings Assurance Program
Beginning next year, all fully exempt members are guaranteed a $500,000 league minimum. At the season's end, the program will fund any gap between comprehensive earnings and the minimum who participates in at least 15 events. Rookies have an option to get their payment up front.
Travel stipend
Non-exempt players will have access to the new Travel Stipend Program, which will give $5,000 to players who missed cut to assist with travel costs and expenses. This, along with the Earnings Assurance Program, replaces the Play15 Program which was instituted this season.
