DevLog PXR26 Symbiosis/\Dysbiosis

We have been working with the Spad Symbiotic board and Biodata boards from Sam Cusumano (links below), but today we decided to noodle with a Pocket Scion since it works with OSC (for TouchDesigner) and we work with OSC for our EEG devices (generously provided by InteraXon MUSE).

For our upcoming PXR performances, which take place simultaneously at Theatre Passé Muraille, Toronto, and VIVO Media Arts Centre, Vancouver, we will create a cross-country wood wide web through living mycelium onsite at both spaces, sending bio-electrical activity into our VR experience.

Players (guests) in our virtual coastal rainforest might connect their brainwave activity with the fungi’s bio-electrical activity. This is essentially the goal. When your brainwave activity connects with another player and/or with the living mycelium, your perception slowly starts to alter, and you see the microscopic connections between all things. Listening to the forest and working together with fellow players eventually brings you face to face with the Mycelial Entity.

Don’t listen to the forest; don't recognize your human connection to the more-than-human shared environment? Dysbiosis occurs.

Symbiosis/\Dysbiosis — Live VR Theatre at PXR26

Toronto, ON — Symbiosis/\Dysbiosis will present a series of live VR theatre performances at Theatre Passe Muraille as part of PXR26.

Blending immersive theatre, bioart, and extended reality, Symbiosis/\Dysbiosis invites audiences into a responsive ecosystem where real-time fungal biodata, live performers, and evolving soundscapes converge. Each performance unfolds live, shaped by biological signals from living mycelium and the presence of performers across physical and virtual space.

The production features VR choreographer and actor Mandy Canales, who will be live in Toronto for the performances, alongside remote performers, Marinda Botha (South Africa) and Christopher Coles (Alberta, CA). 

A custom bio-sensing system translates fungal bio-electrical activity into sound and spatial modulation, allowing the VR environment to evolve uniquely with each showing.

• February 28, 2026 — 5:00–6:00PM PT • 8:00-9:00PM ET

Symbiosis/\Dysbiosis positions VR theatre as a site of listening, care, and ecological entanglement, inviting audiences to encounter technology not as spectacle, but as a living interface with more-than-human intelligence.
