Back in 2007, Nintendo had the brilliant idea to send their beloved mascot on an intergalactic adventure on the Wii. To ensure Mario’s latest game made a monumental impact in the long-running franchise, the company opted for a daring new approach to its soundtrack: full orchestration! As the grand finale to Super Mario Galaxy, this credits theme brings an equal blend of light, airy medleys from the flutes, strings, and woodwinds (including a playful oboe solo) with a rush of excitement from the brass and percussion.

This arrangement takes listeners on a journey through outer space, soaring through the stars with several motifs found throughout the game. Those familiar with Super Mario Galaxy may recognize elements of the game’s title theme and, perhaps most iconic of all, Gusty Garden Galaxy. This particular melody is featured in a solo on the soprano saxophone, before being joined by the full orchestra to lead into the final march-like section of the arrangement. The bold, triumphant ending calls back to the beginning of the piece, bringing Mario’s journey full circle before its grand finale.
