In 2020 Rollin Stone published an article alleging payola practices by Independent radio promoter Steve Zap according to court documents, Rolling stone claiming they obtained over 2,500 text message correspondences between various industry professionals and Steve Zap, independent radio promoter best known for his work at labels like MCA Records, Virgin Records, and Warner Records. In the article Artists such as Dua Lipa, Shawn Mendez and Halsey benefited from payola allegedly.
