Most digital releases of this song are de-noised and reverbed, but I found a good 90's CD release with dynamic range. The vocals were the easiest part (separate, clean, restore, rebalance). The instrumental took time since there are both strings and horns. I isolated most of the bass and piano, compressed it. The other instruments I had to leave alone. Initially I had the piano to the far right, but the strings couldn't balance the left channel on their own. For the video I went with the original photo from The Shining (of course). It was released publicly, but the top section was missing. I reconstructed it and Jack Nicholson's face from screenshotting the 4K transfer of the film, and editing them back together. I wanted to AI animate the picture, but I don't have the specs to run ComfyUI. The song is so long anyway that AI might not know how to fill the duration. I wanted to try a parallax with the foreground/background, but it was so tedious and if they came out of sync there'd be a bunch of repeating figures. I settled with tilting the photo instead, so it doesn't appear as stagnant. Since it was complicated, I used kolorize.cc to do the base work, then cleaned and modified it with GIMP.
Stanley Kubrick didn't do very much to the original photo. In the film (originally 4:3), he tracks-in with a cut-out of Jack Nicholson on top. For the closeup, he cleaned a tear on the upper right and printed a copy with Jack airbrushed-in so you don't notice the cutout (Jack is also less tilted). He didn't do anything else, it's just a very occult-looking picture. The airbrushing was good for its time, but could've been better. You can tell Jack's photo was newer with less grain, and the work left reflection marks. Hopefully I made it more convincing.
