Timothy Snyder, renowned American historian specialising in the history of Central and Central Europe, opened Writing in Times of War with a mini-lecture on the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Writers Andrei Kurkov, Timothy Snyder and Lisa Weeda then explored in a conversation with Eva Hartog, using their own work and the work of their fellow writers, what it means to write about and in times of war. Is language adequate, does language offer comfort and is language the best medium to tell the world about the situation in a war zone? Is fiction sometimes necessary to describe the facts?

Timothy Snyder, beroemd Amerikaans historicus gespecialiseerd in de geschiedenis van Midden en Centraal Europa, opende Writing in Times of War met een mini-college over de Russische aanval op Oekraïne.

Schrijvers Andrej Koerkov, Timothy Snyder en Lisa Weeda verkenden vervolgens in gesprek met Eva Hartog aan de hand van hun eigen werk en het werk van hun collega-schrijvers wat het betekent om te schrijven over en in tijden van oorlog. Is taal toereikend, biedt taal troost en is taal het beste medium om de wereld te vertellen over de toestand in een oorlogsgebied? Is fictie soms nodig om de feiten te beschrijven?
