How I prep for a 3+ day fast 👇
I just completed the longest water fast I’ve ever done (it ended up being longer than 3 days) and this was how I prepped for it!
First off, let me clarify WHY I fast in the first place:
❌ I do NOT fast for weight loss. Fasting for weight loss is just called starving yourself. 72 hours of fasting does not lead to meaning full fat loss. Most of the weight lost is water weight and you gain it right back after the fast.
✅ I fast for the longevity and health promoting benefits: mainly autophagy. Prolonged fasting induces higher levels of a process called autophagy. This is a process by which your body breaks down and recycles old and damaged parts of cells (malfunctioning mitochondria, misfolded proteins, etc). This clears the way for new, healthy cellular components to take their place. It’s essentially cellular recycling! ♻️
Leading up to a fast, I prepare by focusing on the following in my diet:
✨ Eating at least at maintenance, if not a surplus (no sleeping in and ending up eating a smaller breakfast). I’m already going to be in a huge deficit. No reason to start earlier than intended.
✨Nutrient density — my body will have zero nutrients (other than electrolytes) coming in for 72 hours so I try to give it an abundance beforehand. This comes in the form of organ meats, red meat, and vegetables.
✨Reduced carb intake — I don’t have a specific goal, I just avoid foods that are higher carb for a day or two. This helps me get into ketosis faster doing my fast since I have less glucose stored to burn through. Once you’re in ketosis during a fast, it feels a TON easier.
✨Autophagy promoting foods — green tea, turmeric, coffee, berries, etc can all promote autopahgy in the body. Since my goal with fasting is to promote autophagy, I figure it can’t hurt to start promoting it through dietary intake before I start my fast.
