Breast milk storage time depends greatly on temperature and storage methods. Knowing how long breast milk can be safely stored helps protect your baby’s health and preserves its nutritional value.
At room temperature around 25–26°C (77–79°F), freshly expressed breast milk should be used within 3 hours. After this time, bacteria may grow rapidly and reduce milk safety. In hotter environments, the storage time should be shortened even further.
When stored in the refrigerator at 0–4°C (32–39°F), breast milk can remain safe for up to 48 hours while maintaining its nutritional quality. Before feeding, warm the milk gently using a bottle warmer or by placing it in warm water. Avoid boiling or microwaving breast milk.
In a freezer at -18°C (0°F), breast milk can be safely stored for 3 to 6 months. Once thawed, the milk should be used within 24 hours and must not be refrozen.
For travel or outdoor situations, breast milk stored in insulated cooler bags with ice packs can be safely used for about 6 to 8 hours, as long as the milk remains cold. Once the milk has warmed to room temperature, it should not be given to the baby.
Proper breast milk storage ensures your baby receives safe and nutritious milk at every feeding.
