California says its elections are secure. The DOJ is asking: Then why will the state not open its voter rolls?
Mehek Cooke spoke to Bill Essayli, first assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, about federal scrutiny of California’s election system, DOJ’s fight for access to the state’s voter rolls, and the stakes heading into the midterms.
Essayli said California has “basically” decriminalized voter fraud by stripping away safeguards that other states use to ensure only eligible U.S. citizens are registered and casting ballots.
He also discussed a publicly charged case involving a woman accused of paying homeless people on Skid Row to register to vote with false information, California’s accepted forms of identification for first-time voters, the SAVE Act, and why proof of citizenship at the time of voting would be “the safest, most secure way” to ensure compliance with federal law.
At the end of the interview, news broke that Gov. Gavin Newsom was alleging that he and his wife were under DOJ investigation. In a written statement to The Daily Signal, Essayli said he could not comment on pending investigations, and DOJ was unable to provide comment.
