2019 docudrama film written and directed by Guy Guido that explores the beginnings of Madonna's music career in New York in 1978. Features in-depth interviews with both Dan & Ed Gilroy, the founding members of Breakfast Club, as well as actors portraying them recreating key moments from their past as they introduce Madonna (actress Jamie Auld) into the world of music for the very first time.
The Breakfast Club was formed in Queens, New York in 1979 and initially featured brothers Dan & Ed Gilroy on guitar and vocals; Angie Schmit on bass guitar, and a pre-fame Madonna on drums and vocals. Angie Schmit would later be replaced by Gary Burke and Mike Monahan would join on drums, with Madonna moving to playing the organ. The songs the band would perform would mainly be a mix of Dan & Ed Gilroy originals as well as a few original songs of Madonna's that she would front the band for.
Madonna had met Dan Gilroy at a party in New York in 1978 and the two started dating; eventually she moved in to the synagogue where Dan lived with his brother Ed. While there, she learned to play the drums and the Breakfast Club was formed shortly thereafter. During this period of time, Dan showed her the basics of playing the guitar and she wrote her first self-penned song "Tell The Truth". What followed was a steady stream of tunes from the struggling dancer including songs such as "Hothouse Flower", "The Sky Is Blue", "Nobody Wants to Be Alone", "Born To Be A Dancer", "Again and Again" (an early version of her later 'Like a Virgin' album track "Over and Over"), and many more.
This version of The Breakfast Club would meet it's end over a disagreement of how many Madonna originals would be featured in their set; Madonna left the group and took with her the rhythm section, Gary Burke and Mike Monahan. In 1980, the threesome would go on to form the short-lived Madonna & the Sky, which minus Mike Monahan would morph into the band Emmy, along with drummer Stephen Bray from Detroit and guitarist Brian Symms.
Eventually, Emmy would disband in 1981 after Madonna was signed as a solo artist to Gotham Management. Gary Burke would rejoin the Gilroy Brothers along with Stephen Bray and form the second incarnation of The Breakfast Club, which would be signed by MCA Records and release their debut album in 1987. "Right On Track", the first single from the album, would become a summertime smash that year, hitting #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by the singles "Kiss & Tell", "Never Be The Same", "Rico Mambo" and "Expressway To Your Heart".
