Hola Mohalla is a magnificent three-day Sikh festival celebrated annually at Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, typically falling a day after Holi. Established by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1701, it was designed to strengthen the Sikh community by showcasing their martial spirit and military prowess.
Key Highlights of the Festival
Martial Arts (Gatka): The festival is famous for Gatka performances, a traditional Sikh martial art involving swords and sticks.
Nihang Singhs: Dressed in traditional blue robes with towering turbans, these warrior monks lead the festivities with displays of horsemanship, tent pegging, and archery.
Grand Procession (Mohalla): On the final day, a massive "military-style" procession moves from the Nihang headquarters to the fort of Holgarh, ending at the sandy bed of the Charan Ganga river.
Community Service (Langar): Massive community kitchens serve free meals to lakhs of devotees, emphasizing equality and service.
Spiritual Gatherings: The air resonates with Kirtan (devotional music) and religious discourses at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, one of the five temporal seats of Sikhism.
Current Event: Hola Mohalla 2026
Dates: The celebrations for 2026 are scheduled from March 4 to March 6.
Green Initiative: The Punjab government has announced a "Green Hola Mohalla" for 2026, banning single-use plastics and providing biodegradable alternatives at all langar sites.
Location: While the main events are at Anandpur Sahib, the festival often begins earlier at Kiratpur Sahib before shifting to the holy city.
