The History Of Seattle’s Best Coffee

From one coffee store in Seattle, Washington to a more than a hundred store franchise all over the world. This is the untold story of the famous Seattle’s best coffee and its success in the coffee industry.

Seattle is a city that has always been known for its coffee, and a coffee shop is named after it – Seattle's best coffee company. But did you know that the man behind Seattle’s best coffee actually didn’t like coffee at all at first? Jim Steward avoided even the smell of it because it made him feel sick. The irony was that the very thing he once hated is the reason he became a millionaire. He went from hating coffee to setting up an ice cream shop and then becoming a pioneer in the coffee business. In this video, you will explore the fascinating story behind Seattle's best coffee to find out how it all started...

The history of Seattle's best coffee… began in 1969 when the Steward brothers, Jim and Dave, put up a seasonal ice cream shop they called Wet Whisker. A year later, as Jim who once hated coffee eventually came to love it, added coffee to their menu. Jim’s first taste of high-end coffee was at an early gourmet coffee shop known as The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. He loved it so much to start working at the shop and later brought what he learned in making coffee to Washington and started roasting coffee at the Wet Whisker.

Their business was not an overnight success and like any other startup companies, theirs also suffered difficulties especially when a competition came into the scene, the Starbucks. Fortunately, the two companies have completely different approaches to their brands, and thanks to Jim’s style of roasting their coffee seemed to be the favorite among many people. It allowed the Stewart Brothers Coffee to expand…and expand fast.

The name Seattle’s best coffee birthed out from winning a 1989 contest as the best coffee in Seattle. But the story did not end there. To find out more about the company, make sure to watch this video until the end.
