In January 2023 we took a little road trip to the West Texas Big Bend Area. Just outside the national park is a little ghost town called Terlingua. Locals and visitors alike congregate on what's known as "The Porch" and tell few stories and sing a few songs. You just never know who you will meet there. On our visit I picked up the community guitar which is always on the porch. The lady who was working in the gift store had just finished work for the day and was outside waiting for her ride. I started playing Red is the Rose and I could hear her humming along and what followed was magical.
It turns out her grandparents were from Newfoundland, Canada, about 10 minutes from where my wife grew up. She learned Red is the Rose while listening to her dad sing it when she was going up.
So here in the desert thousands of miles from home, two complete strangers shared a few minutes of beautiful music together. That is what music does.
I do not own the copyright to this song. The writer is unknown but the melody is taken from the classic Scottish folk song, Loch Lomond.
