The Harsh Reality of Van Life

We leave camp trying to beat an incoming snowstorm and cross a mountain pass before conditions turn. What seems simple quickly becomes fuel calculations, slushy roads, plow trucks throwing gravel, and backtracking after discovering forest road closures from past fires. The further we drive, the more it becomes clear that living on the road is not always about epic views and perfect campsites.

We finally find a beautiful snow covered creek side spot. It is quiet, peaceful, and exactly why we choose this lifestyle. But there is one problem. No open sky means no Starlink. No internet means no work. And as full time van lifers, work still has to happen.

So we pack up again.

This is the side of van life people do not always talk about. Changing plans. Closed roads. Burn scar restrictions. Weather that does not cooperate. Choosing between a stunning camp and the ability to earn a living.

Van life is freedom, but it is also responsibility, logistics, and constant adaptation. If you are living on the road or dreaming about it, this is the real story.
