Archiving a good old kids game that our younger brother used to learn and read english alphabet and words with. It is called the Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read CD-ROM. We recall having the CD from early 2000s. Hearing the same game really brings us back to that time.
For archivers out there that may have discovered their great old gems and want to share how the gameplay looks and sounds like, the secret key to do this particular task is to use a virtual machine. Choose the operating system the old application is designed to work with. At the main operating system, use the advanced display settings to force the display screen to 640x480 resolution. Capture the screen and audio using OBS Studio. It works best but if you have limited memory and graphics, audio stutter and frame skips can be a problem. I also couldn't avoid such problems with my system.
I also tried to capture the same thing on a real 32-bit Windows 7 laptop through the VGA to AV converter and EasyCAP AV Video Capture Device but the composite video removes a lot of the clarity and color of the picture but the audio is clear. Composite Video is better left for VHS or Disc Videos and nostalgic feel. An hdmi capture device could also be another solution, but I don't have one (hehehehehe) oh well... got to look for another solution.
I then tried screen recording with VLC Media Player and Sound Recorder/Audacity inside a real Windows 7 32-bit machine. It somehow worked but the video and audio never-ever synced. VLC Player should have included Audio Capture. If that happens it would be the best open source way to record screen and audio with old machines where there is limited memory and graphics you can only work with.
