21 February is observed as International Mother Language Day, a day dedicated to honoring linguistic diversity and the right of people to use their mother tongue.
The day commemorates the historic Language Movement of 1952, when students of Dhaka University sacrificed their lives demanding recognition of Bangla as a state language in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan). Their sacrifice highlighted the deep connection between language, identity, and cultural freedom.
In recognition of this movement, UNESCO declared 21 February as International Mother Language Day in 1999. The aim is to promote multilingual education, protect endangered languages, and encourage respect for all languages across the world.
