May 18th & 19th Working on the Oliver 1850 Steering Box

Описание: Taken May 18th & 19th 2024. Well its time to put the steering box back together and I'm using parts out of the steering box out of the 1855 to put it back together. I would use the whole thing but its been sitting a long time open and I dont trust it so I ended up using the gear and the cover off it. My box the T post of the narrow front had been run loose and I didnt know how good the tapper splines are so I used the other one. Getting this back together take a bit of luck in trying to line all the pieces back together all at once and it took a bit of doing but I got it all back together. Saturday evening my GF called broke down on the side of the road so I closed up shop and went to get her. The trans went out on her van and it had to sit overnight till the next day when we went back to figure out what to do with it. Watch the video to hear the explanation of what went on. Any way I had gotten both new tie rods for the front end and we got them wrong, There is a small and large and he looked at it and said they were the big ones by the end he looked at but as it turns out it was a big one and the other 3 were small ones! As it turned out the steering arm on the left side was broken and wallowed out so they had put a big end on it to try to use it that way. Well I got to take them all back and exchange them for the right ones and order a new used steering arm to put it back together with. Its never a boring moment when you work on older equipment cause there is always a surprise or 2 waiting to reveal itself !
