Storyline:
Mystery writer Cornelia Van Gorder has rented a country house called "The Oaks", which not long ago had been the scene of some murders committed by a strange and violent criminal known as "The Bat". Meanwhile, the house's owner, bank president John Fleming, has recently embezzled one million dollars in securities, and has hidden the proceeds in the house, but he is killed before he can retrieve the money. Thus the lonely country house soon becomes the site of many mysterious and dangerous activities.

"Some people don't like to watch anything that's not in color...they don't know what they're missing. Some people look down at anything made in the fifties or sixties as hopelessly hokey...and they don't know what they're missing either. The Bat is a taut, suspenseful story, and one which proves gore isn't strictly necessary in order to be frightening. Agnes Moorhead shows plenty of spunk, and the great Vincent Price steals every scene in which he appears.

The cinematography of this film is excellent...note the use of dark shadows to conceal and hide peoples' identities, just as the dark mask hides the Bat's face. Jump out of your skin as that eerily-clawed hand appears in frame for the first time. Ignore the truly awful fake-looking bat that appears for a few seconds. No movie's perfect."

"This film is a must-see! If you love spooky thrillers, old dark houses, and stormy tensions then this is for you.

The film is well made and brilliantly acted throughout by the whole cast -- there are wonderful performances from the two leads: Vincent Price (Dr. Wells) and Agnes Moorehead (the mansion's tenant -- mystery writer Cornelia van Gorder), but don't overlook the little acting gems of Lenita Lane (Cornelia's personal maid, Lizzie) and Gavin Gordon (Lt. Anderson).

Sometimes the script is a little "hammy" but in my opinion that only adds to the "charm" of this film. Brim full with atmosphere, it is genuinely creepy in parts and this is balanced beautifully with a scattering of humour and a very warm friendship between Cornelia and Lizzie (Moorehead and Lane).

The ending has you guessing till the very last moment, which I think is the icing on the cake. Give this film a try. You won't regret it."
