Were Peter, Andrew, James, and John Cousins? A First‑Century Possibility

Some Christians throughout history have wondered whether Peter, Andrew, James, and John were more closely connected than we usually imagine. The Bible never states this directly, but when we place the Gospel accounts side by side and consider how first‑century families worked, an interesting possibility begins to emerge.
Matthew, Mark, and John each list the women who stood near the cross of The Lord Jesus, but they use different names. Some scholars have noticed that these descriptions may overlap, suggesting that Salome—the mother of James and John—could also have been the sister of Mary, the mother of The Lord Jesus. Early Christian tradition also hints that another sister of Mary may have been the mother of Peter and Andrew. If these threads are accurate, then the first four disciples weren’t just fishing partners; they were part of an extended family network.
We can’t know for sure, but the idea fits the world The Lord Jesus stepped into. Fishing was often a family trade. Relatives worked the same waters, mended the same nets, and shared the same life. And when The Lord Jesus called His first followers, He called two sets of brothers who already knew each other well. If they were cousins, it would help explain why Peter, James, and John formed His inner circle—not favoritism, but familiarity.
Even if the theory isn’t correct, it reminds us that the Gospels are woven with real relationships, real families, and real communities. The Lord Jesus didn’t build His ministry on strangers. He built it on people with history—brothers, friends, coworkers, and perhaps even cousins—turning ordinary family ties into something eternal.
This video explores that possibility and what it reveals about how The Lord Jesus still works through the relationships already present in our lives today.
