This is the first song I approached in this series. My immediate goals were to try to successfully pair ANY Beatles and Fela. I definitely didn't want to use any Fela i knew well and I was already relatively ignorant of the Beatles catalog.
I scoured for every Acapella version of a Beatles song I could find which would logistically give me a subset of songs from their catalog to focus on. All Together Now sorted alphabetically high on the list and I had never heard it before.
Scanning through the Fela catalog to find a pairing, I started alphabetically, avoiding songs i knew and found Ako which I have rarely heard. Playing the two, side by side, suggested some potential in their pairing but not outright since there were some distinct pitch difference. Once I had the two rocking in Live and made some adjustments, it was like they were meant to be, all together.
"All Together Now" represents the entire theme of this mashup... Different styles, and races rocking together... peace and love, the ultimate mashup and, such is in the spirit of both Fela and The Beatles' work.
For the ReFlix, I sourced footage from the Beatles Anthology, 8 Episode Series and, to depict togetherness, I featured shots from the absolutely stunning film Baraka.
... (+) The Marksmen
"Baraka" Named after a Sufi word that translates roughly as "breath of life" or "blessing," Baraka isRon Fricke's impressive follow-up to Godfrey Reggio's non-verbal documentary filmKoyaanisqatsi. Fricke was cinematographer and collaborator on Reggio's film, and forBaraka he struck out on his own to polish and expand the photographic techniques used onKoyaanisqatsi. The result is a tour-de-force in 70mm: a cinematic "guided meditation" (Fricke's own description) shot in 24 countries on six continents over a 14-month period that unites religious ritual, the phenomena of nature, and man's own destructive powers into a web of moving images. "All Together Now" is a song by The Beatles written primarily byPaul McCartney[1][2] and credited to Lennon/McCartney. The song was recorded during the band's Magical Mystery Tour period, but remained unreleased until it was included on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack
"Ako" Recorded in 1969 under duress courtesy of the Department of Immigration and Naturalization, the Los Angeles Sessions are among the earliest glimpse of Fela Anikulapo Kuti's developing Afrobeat sound. What makes this release different from much of his recorded work is the length and number of songs: ten tracks, average length 4:39. Unusual, since most Fela material is 15 minutes or more.
