Caesar didn’t hide—he built two walls and stood between them. Outside Alesia he ringed Vercingetorix with an inner fortification and blocked the relief army with an outer one: flooded ditches, pits with spikes, stake fences, towers—the field turned into a kill maze. The Gauls hit both rings at once; Caesar raced to the weak points, threw in reserves, and unleashed his cavalry through gaps he’d prepared.
When the final push came, his red cloak showed up at the breaking sector—and the line snapped the other way. The relief force broke, the sally died on the palisade, and by nightfall Alesia was finished.
