Racism in India is often discussed as something that exists elsewhere — but for people from India’s Northeast, it is a lived, everyday reality.
“See Us As We Are” is a documentary that explores the racism, discrimination, and alienation faced by Northeast Indians, particularly in metropolitan cities like Delhi. Through street voices, personal testimonies, and official perspectives, this film tries to answer a simple but uncomfortable question: Why do Northeast Indians still feel like outsiders in their own country?
The documentary revisits incidents like the Nido Taniam case, where a 19-year-old student was mocked, attacked, and beaten in a racist assault at a commercial market in the national capital. The incident triggered widespread protests and eventually led to the formation of the North East Student Society (NESS) in 2014 — an umbrella body for Northeast students across Delhi University colleges, born out of repeated experiences of violence, stereotyping, and neglect.
This film features:
Voices of people from the Northeast sharing their lived experiences
Interviews capturing public perceptions and ignorance
Perspectives from police and authorities
A deeper look at how casual racism, slurs, and stereotyping can escalate into violence
The recent killing of a young student from Tripura in Dehradun has once again brought this issue into the national spotlight — reminding us that these are not isolated incidents, but part of a larger, unresolved problem.
This documentary does not aim to sensationalise pain. It aims to document reality, provoke introspection, and start conversations that India has avoided for far too long.
Because racism does not always shout — sometimes, it survives in jokes, stares, silence, and denial.
See us as we are.
See us as Indians.
