Part of a series of reels from this concert - find all of them here:
• Louis Armstrong
Another reel from the previously UNHEARD Louis Armstrong and His All Stars concerts in May of 1948! With this reel we get to hear the lovely vocal tones of Jack Teagarden, along with some great trombone work. Old Rockin’ Chair is a fun duet between Jack and Louis - you can tell these two absolutely love performing with each other! The final track is sadly cut off - Velma Middleton’s saucy and fun Where Did you Stay Last Night. I wish I had the entire tune but unfortunately we only get a couple of minutes! You can literally see the tape spin off the hub because I wanted every last second to get recorded digitally.
Here’s the track listing:
1) 100 Years from Today (Jack singing) 00:00
2) Basin Street Blues (Jack singing) 04:32
3) Old Rockin’ Chair (Jack & Louis duet) 8:01
4) Where Did You Stay Last Night (Velma singing) 10:57
The All Stars group members joining Louis for this concert were:
Jack Teagarden - Trombone and Vocals
Velma Middleton - Vocals
Earl “Fatha” Hines - Piano
Arvell Shaw - Double Bass
Big Sid Catlatt - Drums
Barney Bigard - Clarinet
The background of these tapes:
A tremendously exciting find in the archive - a recording of Louis Armstrong and his All Stars taken from two different concerts on May 8th and May 9th 1948 in St. Paul, and Minneapolis, Minnesota respectively. These concerts have never been heard before. The creator of this archive worked for 3M (who manufactured the Scotch audio tape this was recorded on) in the twin cities and likely got special permission to record the concert, as high-quality tape recordings were a novel and still developing technology in the late 1940s. These recordings have sat in various Marchant family homes for nearly 80s years before now being shared with you on YouTube.
This concert is right at the start of Louis Armstrong and his All Stars group, and the playing is tight and joyous. They are clearly having fun on stage. There are tiny problems with audio on these tapes but other than that the sound is sensational for 77 year old recordings, probably helped by the high speed 15 inches per second recording.
More to come from these concerts as I try to piece together the tapes into something coherent. Please subscribe and stay tuned.
I also highly recommend visiting the truly excellent Louis Armstrong House museum in Corona, Queens, New York City, or becoming a member/donating:
