St. C. officials credit infrastructure upgrades for significant drop in water line breaks

Описание: t. Clairsville road crews have spent the last two years replacing 40% of the city’s water lines. Because of that, city officials say they are confident they will see less water line breaks as temperatures continue to drop.

The project replaced lines that have been in use since 1927 along the city's distribution system. New PVC pipes were used, replacing the outdated cast iron pipes which were more vulnerable to breaks.

"It was causing many main line water breaks,” said Mike Reed, the city’s water and wastewater superintendent. “Especially this time of year when the ground gets real hard and then it softens up and gets hard again, it basically squeezes that pipe until it fractures the pipe."

In 2024, the city saw a total of 132 line breaks. But after Phase One of the project was completed, that total dropped to just 27 in 2025.
