It was really nice to see so many of the once familiar faces at club Motorsport events at this one. Unfortunately, this same race day turned into a perfect example of why so many of those people are no longer seen at such events today
Far more crash-strewn events have been held here and been completed far faster, some by the same club! Some clumsy moves in places, but honestly not that many of them, recovery took FAR too long and races weren't shortened early enough. In fact I'd argue the CMMC Festival here earlier this year with multiple BRSCC championships on the schedule caused more carnage, more often, yet was completed on time. On paper this meeting looked great. Good series in attendance, great grids for a Saturday in October, and championships to be decided. A collection of series that we KNOW can race cleanly here
We'll start with the Swift Sport Challenge who took the honor of race number 1 of the day after a promisingly trouble free morning of qualifying that meant we could have started early. Oil on circuit would shorten Race 1, which went to James Saggers, from 2nd Louis Woodward and 3rd Connor Forster, as Aaron Mullen fell out of 3rd on the oil. Race 2 winner would be Saggers again, this time from Forster 2nd and Shay Brennan 3rd. A packed grid of mostly relative newcomers to racing, struggling a bit with the esses, but mostly racing perfectly clean. A grand example of how to do it.
I can't really say the same for the Ma7da series, who in the past have been flawless here. Much like Cadwell earlier in the season, Race 1 had 2 attempts and both failed. Attempt 1 ended at turn 1, lap 1. Tom Coller and Mark Crawford collided at the front, Matt Graux and Simon Walker spun at the back, and Paul Southwell went off in the middle. Southwell hit the stationary Coller, leaving the former rather dazed and the latter covered in his own extinguishant! Attempt 2 saw the biggest crash here since Clive Hudson's huge accident in 2018, when Luke Mason tangled with a slowing Graux from crash number 1 who had been elbowed wide by Ross Loram into Gerards, sending Mason into a nasty series of rotations. Mason amazingly seemed in better condition that Southwell prior, and walked away easily. Race 1 abandoned. Race 2 somehow lasted even less time! Lee Rogers and Crawford (yes again!) touched almost immediately off the line and were stranded against the wall. Both were OK but for some reason all of the ambulances were called, as was the race! Loads of time lost and no result for either attempt
Historic 750 Formula was its usual behaved self with race 1 winner being Richard Verheyden, Tim Sage in 2nd and the recovering Gregg Caton, who stalled on the grid but recovered the Dison to 3rd. Race 2's handicapped event saw a complete shake up and the traditional spec Austins dominating, as Matt Tomkins won from Peter Marsh and James Ricketts rounding out the top 3
Formula Vee featured a title decider that involved Leon Frost and John Hughes having to do everything to stop Matt Harbot claiming the title. A job that they dutifully failed when the former two collided at the front in Race 1, ending the race under safety car and wiping both out of the event in slightly clumsy fashion. Harbot would win race 1 from Pete Belsey and Dan Polley. Race 2 saw Harbot win again and take the crown, from Belsey and Colin Gregory, as darkness began to creep in by now
The Clio Sport Championship was wild up front for Race 1 honours, as Josh North's car gave up whilst leading, giving Chris Lawrence the lead until he missed a gear out of the final turn allowing Darren Ransom to win, from Lawrence and Mark Witherington 3rd. Race 2 went to Ransom again from Lawrence and Matt Hipkins 3rd
Hot Hatch completed their first race with drama as Lewis Barker's car failed on the green flag lap and eliminated his Class A title hopes. Matt Wilkins would win from Tate Tavener and Lewis Ellis 3rd, effectively wrapping up the Class A crown. Race 2 sadly barely happened after a clumsy move put us behind a lengthy safety car. Wilkins won from Zac Bunnell 2nd and Tavener 3rd
