There are stories that just came up that I just said, Wow, que fuerte, que fuerte.… That sometimes people have to live through this experience and then also they have had to learn to confront it but also rise above it as well and make a life for themselves here whether or not they are accepted, for me was also very revealing. And that acceptance isn’t really the gist of their return. There are other reasons.”

This opening statement of Episode 36 gives us a glimpse into Dr. Carmen Haydee Rivera Vega’s reflections on El Retorno/ The Return. Her forthcoming book, Cuentos del Retorno/ Stories of Return is an anthology of essays tracing various journeys of those who return to Puerto Rico and those who are constantly flowing between archipelago/ diaspora. Our conversation takes us to the difficulties many of us face in returning, however there is a transcendent force that drives us. Carmen Haydee, raised in Boston, is a professor in the Humanities Department at la Universidad de Puerto Rico-Río Piedras. Look out for this very necessary bilingual/ spanglish book to be published in 2026 by the fabulous Editora Educación Emergente. This research and literary contribution helps to fill the void. Most scholarly work around Puerto Rico focuses on the migration out of the archipelago versus those of us returning. I am beyond happy to have been invited by Carmen to contribute an essay to this important collection and to have her share her journey here on the Rematriating Borikén Podcast.
