The Triple Compression test came from a paper in 2012 (Abouelela, A. A., & Zohiery, A. K. (2012). The triple compression stress test for diagnosis of tarsal tunnel syndrome. The Foot, 22(3), 146-149) as a way to diagnose tarsal tunnel syndrome. The purpose of the test is to stress the posterior tibial nerve and its branches to proke entrapment signs or symptoms.
How to perform it
-Have the patient on a table with their leg extended
-Put their ankle into full plantarflexion, the foot into inversion and apply pressure with your fingers over the posterior tibial nerve
-Hold this for 30 seconds
A positive is a production of symptoms.
Only the original paper has any evidence about this test. The researchers compared people with symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome in one or both feet, to a control group with no symptoms. They did perform electrodiagnostic studies on all of the participants as well. Out of the 65 people who had symptoms, 61 were positive with this test so they found the sensitivity was 85.9% and specificity was at 100%.
What do you think of this test? Do you use it? Have you heard of it? Think we need to study it some more? Let me know down in the comments.
