This is the provocative question posed here by neuroscientist Elisabeth Murray. To address it, she walks us through the history of failures, then qualified successes, then subsequent (and ongoing) revisions, of attempts to develop a definitive model in the monkey of human medial temporal-lobe amnesia (à la patient H.M.). Along the way, she makes explicit contact with ideas addressed in the section on Sensation, Perception, Attention, and Action, including the functions of the ventral and dorsal visual streams, and with others that will be addressed in the section on Cognitive Control and High-Level Cognition, about the representation of value and of emotion, and how these influence memory and behavior.
