Exploring the remains of several beehive style coke oven remains located
near Searles.These coke ovens and the coal washer are pretty much all
that is left of a once massive coal mining operation dating back to the 1890's.
Alabama Consolidated Coal & Iron Company owned and operated the mines at Searles and nearby Brookwood until being purchased by Sloss-Sheffield Steel & iron Company in 1924.
By 1912 over 200 beehive style coke ovens operating at Searles. These
coke ovens operated into the 1920's before being finally abandoned as
newer more efficient coke plants had been built by Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Company in Birmingham
