I am thrilled that "The Hawaiian Alphabet Song" won the John Lennon Songwriting Grand prize!
I recorded the demo in Garage Band with a loop and just vocals. When I took it to Brad Jones (at Alex The Great) in Nashville, we went thru his loops and choose the one you hear on the final master. We used Pro Tools. I sang with the loop in a general key of C. ("Like Tomorrow Never Knows", the song is in C the whole way through. (Thanks John Lennon for that great idea). The band came in the next day, and Brad and I explained our musical approach. We thought it'd be cool to have vibes and flute doubled in octaves to give it a mystical and magical feeling. I sang some harmonies and Mickey, the drummer, added percussion and some ambient words low in the mix. We started the song off with a blow of a conch shell (sampled) as the conch is used in Hawaiian culture to announce a spiritual event (like the sunset). We also added bamboo claps at the "okina" part. I wanted to introduce both one of the longest Hawaiian words I could find, "humu humu nuku nuku apa a'a" (trigger fish) and one of the shortest..."ono" (delicious). My girls (3 and 5 at the time of recording) sang on the choruses and also on the "lesson" call and response at the end. I have created a video on youtube about the recording of the song.
Lyrics:
A E I O U
Heh, keh, la, moo noo, pee, vay (H,K,L,M,N,P,W)
Okina oh-oh
Okina oh-oh
A E I O U
Heh, keh, la, moo noo, pee, vay (H,K,L,M,N,P,W)
Okina oh-oh
Okina
If you want to know a little bit
About the Hawaiian language oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
They got 5 open vowels and 7
Magical musical consonants oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
And there's a little stop called an okina
Sounds like the space between aa- ee- ii - oo uu
CHORUS
The Hawaiian language has a long
Complicated history oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
The people with pens tried to write it all down
To them it was it was a mystery
oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
And we can practice by saying the Hawaiian word for triggerfish
It goes "Humu humu nuku nuku apu aa"
(Humu humu nuku nuku apu aa)
Humu humu nuku nuku apu aa
(Humu humu nuku nuku apu aa)
And we can practice by saying the Hawaiian word for delicious
It's "ono" (ONO) "ono" (ONO ono)
chorus
