Dechenphug Lhakhang

Описание: Dechenphug Lhakhang is a fortified monastery located on the western slope of the Thimphu valley, surrounded by dense forests. It was founded in the 12th century by Dampa, a descendant of Phajo Drugom Shigpo, a Tibetan master who introduced the Drukpa school of Buddhism to Bhutan. Dampa established the monastery at a site linked to Geynyen, a warrior deity.

The monastery’s leadership lineage includes Dampa’s son, Kuenzang Dorji, and his grandson, Damtrul Loden Gyalpo, who studied in Tibet before returning to Bhutan with his mentor, Kuenga Sengye.

The goenkhang, a fortified tower that remains the focal point of Dechenphug Lhakhang, was constructed by Kuenga Sengye. Most goenkhangs are designed to enshrine powerful protective deities. According to legend, Kuenga Sengye had to subdue the spirit before it could be transformed into a guardian deity. The spirit of Jagpa Melen—another name for Geynyen, meaning “Fire Fetching Brigand and Supreme Warlord”—retreated into a large stone known as the Thimphu, meaning "Disappeared into the Stone." It is said that in Bhutan’s greatest time of need, the warlord will emerge from the stone to defend the nation.

The goenkhang, houses a prayer wheel, religious artifacts, a worship hall dedicated to Mahakala, and a Buddha shrine. Its walls feature weapons taken from Tibetan invaders, while the Thimphu stone is enshrined nearby.

Historically, the monastery held biannual ceremonies in his honor, but today it serves as a pilgrimage site for Bhutanese seeking blessings.

Between 1996 and 1998, Dechenphug Lhakhang underwent restoration, including new monk residences and landscaping to accommodate more pilgrims. However, the demolition of the original courtyard structures altered the historical layout. The monastery remains open only to Bhutanese citizens, preserving its sacred nature.

Dechenphug Lhakhang is a popular destination for both adults and children, who visit to seek blessings, especially before undertaking significant endeavors.
