Final Fantasy VI is sometimes referred to as Final Fantasy III due to the way the Final Fantasy series was localized for its initial release outside of Japan. When Final Fantasy VI was first released in North America in 1994, it was the third game in the series to be localized for the international market. However, the original Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III had not been released outside of Japan at that time. To avoid confusing players and to maintain continuity, Square (now Square Enix), the developer of Final Fantasy, decided to skip the release of Final Fantasy II and III for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) in North America. Instead, they directly localized Final Fantasy VI as Final Fantasy III for its North American release.
