This talk by Helen Berman was recorded at the DRIIMB seminar on 27 January 2026.
“In this talk I will trace how the Protein Data Bank (PDB) evolved over more than fifty years and the roles played by science, technology, and community in making the PDB a powerful tool for protein structure prediction and design. The ways in which the PDB aligns with the principles of community building, as studied by the Stakeholder Alliance, will be described.”
— Helen M. Berman
Professor Berman is a Board of Governors Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Rutgers University and the former Director of the RCSB Protein Data Bank, one of the founding organizations of the Worldwide Protein Data Bank. A distinguished structural biologist, her research spans the structural analysis of protein–nucleic acid complexes and the role of water in molecular interactions. She is also the founder and director of the Nucleic Acid Database and previously led the Protein Structure Initiative Structural Genomics Knowledgebase.
