This ritual, known as the Водохреще (Vodokhreshche), commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and symbolizes spiritual purification and renewal.​

Participants, both men and women, brave the freezing waters, often through cross-shaped holes cut into the ice, embracing the physical and spiritual challenges of the plunge. Beyond its religious significance, this practice has garnered attention for its potential health benefits.
