The Congress party is taking a crucial step to re-establish its political presence in Andhra Pradesh. Protesting the renaming of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, the party has chosen Andhra Pradesh as the launchpad for a nationwide agitation. On February 2, the Congress high command will hold a massive protest at Bandlapalli village in Anantapur district.
Notably, it was at the same village in 2006 that Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh formally launched the employment guarantee scheme. Recalling that legacy, the Congress has decided to raise its protest from the same venue, on the same date, nearly two decades later—making the move politically symbolic and strategic.
Senior leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Priyanka Gandhi are expected to participate in the event. Through this agitation, the Congress aims to position itself firmly on the side of the poor and revive the party in Andhra Pradesh under the leadership of YS Sharmila. The Bandlapalli protest is expected to have a significant impact not only on state politics but also on the national political landscape.
