In this tutorial, we’re going to show you how to use INDIRECT and deal with INDIRECT errors in Excel 2016.
The INDIRECT formula is used especially when editing other formulas without changing them. INDIRECT() takes a cell reference as a parameter, looks at that particular cell and what’s inside, and then uses what was in the cell as the new reference. =INDIRECT(A2) for example, would look at the cell A2, and inside A2 is the text “B2”, it would then use whatever value is in B2, which is 1.333.
You can also use INDIRECT with cell names. A4 contains George, and INDIRECT will look for a cell in the sheet that is named George.
You can also concatenate in the INDIRECT formula. =INDIRECT(“B”&A5) will look at what is in A5 which is 5, and add B to the beginning of that to create B5. It will then return the value 62.
