HEMA fencers need to change direction rapidly, absorb force, re-accelerate, and move elastically under fatigue...all while reacting to an opponent rather than executing a pre-planned pattern.
This video shows a 3-part series of plyometric exercises from HEMAFIT designed specifically to train those qualities:
A. Stiffness and elastic energy (pogo hops)
B. Lateral force production and absorption
C. Rapid change of direction (COD)
D. Ending stability in your lunge
The three drills shown are intended to be performed back-to-back as a continuous series, challenging coordination, timing, and endurance. Try 3-5 reps of each exercise - on each leg! - before moving on to the next one.
This is the kind of unglamorous but essential work that supports better fencing performance, whether you’re fighting in the ring, on the piste, or in armor.
