The Bible's Tabernacle plan, detailed in Exodus 25-31 and 35-40, was a portable sanctuary God commanded Moses to build as a dwelling place for His presence among the Israelites in the wilderness, foreshadowing Christ and featuring an Outer Court, a Holy Place (with Table of Showbread, Golden Lampstand, Altar of Incense), and the Most Holy Place (Holy of Holies, housing the Ark of the Covenant with the Mercy Seat).
Structure & Materials
Portable Tent: Made from acacia wood, fine linen, and rich fabrics.
Layers: Four layers of coverings (goats hair, ram skins, badger skins) protected the inner structure.
Courtyard: Enclosed by linen curtains, containing the Brazen Altar and Laver.
Key Furnishings & Their Meaning
Outer Court:
Brazen Altar: For sacrifices, showing sin must be dealt with.
Laver: Bronze basin for priests' cleansing.
Holy Place (Inner Tent):
Table of Showbread: Represented God's provision and fellowship (12 loaves for the tribes).
Golden Lampstand (Menorah): Provided light, symbolizing God's presence and guidance.
Altar of Incense: Before the veil, representing prayers of the saints.
Most Holy Place (Holy of Holies):
Veil: Separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.
Ark of the Covenant: Contained God's law (tablets) with a mercy seat (atonement cover) on top, where God's presence dwelt.
Purpose & Symbolism
God's Dwelling: A physical place for God to meet His people.
Heavenly Pattern: A replica of heavenly realities, pointing to Christ (Hebrews 9).
Access to God: Showed that access to God required sacrifice, cleansing, and atonement, ultimately fulfilled by Jesus.
