Speeding tickets suck in general, but they really blow when they come from cameras.
There’s something about the nanny state surveillance system that’s creepy. “We know you’re technically not harming anyone, but we need revenue, so we’re going to treat the population at large (peasants) like our own piggy bank.”
Went back to the place the camera is located (which took some doing—side note, small towns in Iowa have taken to using speed cameras to generate revenue. It’s found money for them. A private company sets up the camera, collects the revenue, and sends the town a cut.
It’s a wonderful grift, which is why I was prepared to fight this in court.
Went back to the spot I got it, looked things over to see what happened, and took pictures.
Turns out, the speed trap is literally, not figuratively, but literally, eight feet from the sign that changes the speed limit.
Which means that if you speed up or slow down within eight feet of the sign—depending on which direction you’re going—you get dinged.
That seems like an awfully narrow window, which means you should fight back.
Every ticket, every time.
